Welcome To My World

Welcome To My World is an annual concert organised by VSA, involving various Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) and SPEDs schools across Singapore. It first began in 2008 as part of the NUS Arts Festival and since then, has grown into a concert that performers with disabilities look forward to each year to showcase their talent. The aim of this concert is to show that disability does not and should not stop someone from achieving excellence in the arts, and that the arts are for everyone.

This year is the first time in 11 years where our concert is staged at Gateway Theatre. It is also the first time we have Kailin Yong (a musician, composer and educator) to produce the show. To echo VSA Singapore’s dedication to develop and transform our beneficiaries with special needs through the arts, this year's concert is entitled "stepping stones", symbolising the growth and transformation we aim to achieve through the beauty within. Performers include professional dance group Raw Moves, choir group from The Heart Enterprise, VSA artist in collaboration with musicians from Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS), as well as VSA’s very own creative dance group and many more!

The concert will take place at the Gateway Theatre on 24 August 2019, Saturday, at 3pm, and Ms Indranee Rajah, Minister in Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Finance and Education, will grace the concert as the Guest-of-Honour.

Brothel Street

It is common to find bands that play unplugged covers of rock music. It is also common to find bands that use vocal harmonies. What sets Brothel Street apart is their interpretation of rock standards with unique arrangements for guitars and three-part vocal harmonies.

The band’s repertoire focuses on songs that define the richest era of rock and roll. The music of The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, CSNY, CCR, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Queen, Eric Clapton, Queen and many more greats comes to life in an unusual and evocative manner through a unique blend of guitars, bass and vocal harmonies.

Brothel Street debuted in Singapore in 2011. Their upcoming concert will showcase their evolution as a band and bring to life a story of great rock music, from the 1970s to the contemporary.

Bipin, Madhav, Ravi and Swapnil are all working professionals with regular day jobs but with a common passion for the music they play. The four met at a party at mutual friend’s house in Singapore in 2010. Guitars were brought out, and a lively jam session led to a close friendship and the formation of the band. The name “Brothel Street” only acknowledges the location where they met!

An Artful Encounter

AN ARTFUL ENCOUNTER marks the end of Kimberly Chan’s year long journey into the world of Classical singing. Her residency with Gateway Theatre, under her masterful mentors Jonathan Charles Tay, Aloysious Foong and Samantha Scott-Blackhall, has culminated to this short evening of music. What started as an exploration of Classical repertoire in preparation for a competition has turned into a new found love for the lush and dramatic landscape of Classical Repertoire. The songs chosen for this evening begins with the likes of Henry Purcell and Vaughan Williams for English Art songs, as well as the melodious styling of Henri Duparc’s French Art songs. The night then continues with the witty cabaret repertoire of William Bolcom, as well as an aria from Gian Carlo Menotti’s opera, The Old Maid and the Thief.

As You Like It

As You Like It is one of Shakespeare’s most glorious and sunniest comedies. Set in a romantic woodland—the Forest of Arden—the play is about a youthful search for identity, love and happiness revolving around the lively character Rosalind. She sets the tone of the play and is among Shakespeare’s most brilliant heroines.

We have set this production in Singapore and Malaysia in 1965, just as Singapore is about to be exiled from the Malayan Union and set adrift to become a wholly independent state. So, this production celebrates a crucial and confusing episode in Singapore’s bicentennial history. Shakespeare’s Forest of Arden become the jungles of Malaysia, where an exiled politician, chastened by nature, returns to assume power by play’s end and all onstage are married and celebrate new unions. Asian Arden becomes a magical wonderland where dappled sunlight and the music and sounds of nature refresh the human spirit and make miracles possible.
